In the early s. XX, in 1907, the need to create a market place to facilitate sanitary inspection and tax collection was raised. At that time, the City Council lacked the economic resources to undertake its construction, so it decided to open a tender for it to be built by private individuals through a concession for its operation for a period of forty years.

Only one tender was presented, that of Don Pelayo Jiménez León, Mayor of the Villa from July 5, 1894 to mid-1905, so it was this gentleman, together with his relatives, who made this construction possible.

The Plaza de Abastos was baptized with the name of Santa Marta, in memory of a family member who passed away at this time. On the façade of the entrance on Calle Real, there is a tile with the year of its inauguration, 1907.

As of this year. The Plaza de Abastos, contributed to give more life to the most important street of the town. The wealthiest families were concentrated there.

There are two entrances to the Market, the main one on Corredera Street and the one indicated above, on Real Street.

The last renovation of the building was executed by the local architect, Francisco Javier Pineda Sánchez, offering a comprehensive reform to the building and incorporating avant-garde elements that make this enclave one of the most important attractions of the municipality.

Currently the Plaza de Abastos houses both food stalls and restaurants and leisure, and has become a meeting point for both visueños and visueñas and from other municipalities in the region, to shop and enjoy its varied cuisine.
