Piedra de El Gallo

Descripción

The “Piera er Gallo” for some, La Piedra del Gallo for others, is one of the symbols of El Viso del Alcor. Its current location is the traffic circle where the avenues of Andalucía and Piedra del Gallo, and the streets Quevedo, Cañalizo and Santa Lucía meet. It welcomes the visueños who go to celebrate the festivities of La Cruz in the fairgrounds of “La Tablá” and is a witness to the events of the Park of La Muela. Of colossal dimensions, it is estimated that it weighs around 72,000 kilos.

It was located on the Cornisa del Alcor de La Santa, right on the border of El Viso del Alcor with Mairena del Alcor, overlooking the imposing Vega. It served as a cairn to delimit both terms.

The stone was called from the beginning of the history of El Viso del Alcor as Peña del Águila. There are several theories that try to explain the name of “Piera er Gallo” although the most widespread is that it fell while celebrating the Midnight Mass. This fact is denied by the verses sung by a chirigota visueña in the Carnival of 1936. Therefore it can be affirmed that it came off on January 1 of that year.
